Huntly received 60mm of rain throughout the day, a third of which fell in just one hour.

Niwa meteorologist Chris Brandolino told Morning Report it had been a wet few weeks for parts of the North Island.

"We've had easterly winds over the past couple of weeks and that's a very wet windflow, not just for Auckland but for many eastern areas of the North Island."

He said the wet weather wasn't over yet.

"There may be some more downpours today across the North Island, there may be more heavy downpours too.

"Midweek towards Thursday, perhaps tomorrow, we could sneak in a dry day."

The weekend's wild weather came in from Australia were a storm hammered parts of the country last week, with power cut to the entire state of South Australia.
