Groups oppose Meridian's final evidence on hydro scheme

Groups opposing a planned Meridian Energy hydro power scheme on the West Coast are objecting to the company having a final say to a resource consent hearing.

Meridian provided rebuttal evidence to the hearing in Westport earlier this month, answering environmental concerns about the planned 85m-high dam and power station on the Mokihinui River.

However, the Department of Conservation and other opponents have challenged Meridian's legal right to having its final evidence considered.

Commissioners hearing the resource consent have yet to respond.

A decision on whether the hydro scheme should proceed expected in the New Year.
