Police said the attack happened just before 3pm at the main hospital site in Grafton.

A suspect was taken into custody soon after the attack.

The police later confirmed a 56-year-old man had been arrested and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was expected to appear in the Auckland District Court on 19 October.

Auckland District Health Board said the hospital was not put in lockdown but part of the fifth floor was cordoned off.

It was an area the public had been using, between Subway and Makete.

Orange cones and police tape around the cafeteria were taken down about 4pm, but there was still a police presence at the scene earlier this evening.

Neither the DHB nor police were giving out any further information.
