Several people reported a man driving a red Mini at excessive speed the wrong way up a one-way bus lane on Willis Street in peak traffic time.

He then drove through red lights, with pedestrians crossing the road having to run out of his way.

The driver was confronted by another man about his driving when he was stopped in traffic on Customhouse Quay.

Police said the driver chased the man who complained into a nearby building where he assaulted him.

There was no information on the status of the victim, but the driver remained in a stable condition under police guard in Wellington hospital.

Police say it was likely the man would face further charges.

He would face multiple charges, they said.
