SH1 centre barrier near capital to be extended

The New Zealand Transport Agency is to extend a wire barrier along the middle of the Centennial Highway, on State Highway 1, north of Wellington.

The first wire median barriers were installed in early 2005, after a family of four died in a head-on collision on the highway.

Originally the barrier was 700 metres long; now an extension for 5km from Paekakariki to Pukerua Bay, is being considered.

The NZTA regional manager Graham Taylor says it will be a year before consultation and design work is complete and construction on the extension can begin.
