The driver of the northbound car was airlifted to Wellington Hospital with critical injuries following the collision just south of Paekakariki.

The driver of the second car was taken to Wellington Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries, police said. Two passengers from the second car did not require medical treatment.

The road was closed between the railway overbridge and Paekakariki Hill Road for three hours and reopened about 2pm, the Transport Agency said.

Despite alternative routes there have been long queues of traffic.
