Drivers cut free after Hawke's Bay car crash

Two people who were cut from their cars following a crash in Hawke's Bay have been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Police were called to the accident shortly before 5pm to the two car crash on State Highway 2 at Putorino, a small settlement which borders the Hastings and Wairoa districts.

The drivers, who were the sole occupants of each vehicle, had to be cut free by fire crews.

One was flown to Hawke's Bay Hospital while the other was taken in an ambulance.

Both were in a serious condition.

State Highway 2 was reduced to one lane, but has now reopened.
