A man jailed after the vicious prolonged rape of a woman in her Pukekohe home is putting his own case to the Court of Appeal in Auckland.
Roger Tira Kahui was jailed last year for a minimum of 16 years and wants his sentence reduced.
Representing himself, Kahui is appealing 19 of his 26 convictions, claiming there was no forensic dna evidence against him.
He said the minimum sentence of 16 years' imprisonment was too harsh and 13 years would have been more appropriate.
Outside court, the victim's brother said Kahui was clutching at straws. He said Kahui was playing the courts and taking advantage of the legal system.
