The Government has announced initial funding of $46 million for an Auckland housing project.

A project to build new houses in the suburb of Tamaki was first announced by the former Labour government in 2007.

Housing Minister Phil Heatley told Parliament on Tuesday the 20-year project - which will also be funded by the Auckland City Council and Auckland Regional Council - will redevelop and renovate up to five housing precincts.

Mr Heatley says about 150 new homes will be built and another 120 existing state homes will be upgraded in the first phase of the project.

He says a further $6 million will be used by various ministries for programmes to help overcome social and economic challenges in Tamaki.
