The surviving crew member of the Anzac Day helicopter crash is out of intensive care.

Sergeant Stevin Creeggan was one of four Royal New Zealand Air Force men flying to Wellington for an Anzac Day ceremony when their Iroquois helicopter crashed 35 kilometres north of the capital.

The three others were killed.

An Air Force spokesperson, Squadron Leader Kavae Tamariki, says Sgt Creeggan, although still heavily sedated, has been moved to a Wellington Hospital ward.

If he continues to improve, says Squadron Leader Tamariki, they're hopeful he will be transferred to Palmerston North Hospital - where he would be closer to his family - later in the week.
