The European Union has agreed to give Tonga $14 million. The agreement comes after meetings with the country's prime minister, Felete Sevele, in Brussels.

A statement from the Tongan government says that about $10 million from the EU Vulnerability Flex Fund is to help the country counter the impact of the worldwide economic crisis.

The rest will be used to improve electricity distribution in rural areas.

The statement says Mr Sevele has outlined the timetable and progress of the country's political reform programme.
