Men praised for rescuing driver from burning car

7:15 pm on 1 December 2008

Hamilton police say the bravery of two men in rescuing a woman from a burning car on Monday night saved her life.

The car being driven by the 48 year-old woman lost control on Normandy Road in Melville, hit a tree, turned on its side and caught fire. The woman was trapped inside.

Two men, aged 18 and 20, came across the crash about midnight and smashed the rear windscreen, climbed into the car and dragged the driver to safety.

Police say firefighters have confirmed that without the men's bravery, there could have been a fatality.

Instead, the woman suffered only minor injuries.

Police are considering how to recognise the men's bravery.
