Two men - aged 56 and 57 - were arrested on firearms charges after a car and house were searched on the outskirts of Dunedin this week.

Police said both men lived outside the Dunedin area and had gang affiliations.

The guns were probably stolen to be sold on to criminals, police said.

Both men have been charged with unlawful possession of a pistol, three charges of unlawful possession of military-style firearms and one charge of receiving stolen firearms.

Police said further charges were likely.
