A teacher at Ashburton College has been dismissed for sending inappropriate text messages to a student.

The school says the incident came to its attention at the end of March, at which point the teacher was stood down.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan says the text messages were found by the board of trustees to be a matter of serious misconduct.

Mr McMillan says the teacher sent the student several dozen messages, mostly outside school hours. He would not reveal the nature of the messages, nor details of the teacher or student.

The case has been referred to the Teachers Council.

In the past two years, about seven cases regarding inappropriate texting have been refered to the council.
