The four, who are from the No Pride in Prisons group, are protesting over what they say is the solitary confinement of a transgender woman in Springhill Prison.

They went into the Rostrevor Street building about 8.30am and vowed to stay until their demands were met.

Police had been monitoring the situation but decided to move in this afternoon, and arrested the group.

The group had also been picketing outside the department's offices in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.
