Townships go in different direction over growth

3:16 pm on 4 December 2008

Two Central Otago townships disagree on proposals which would greatly increase their population.

While residents in Arrowtown are saying "no" to further growth, it's a different story in Cardrona.

Cardrona currently has 66 residents and is welcoming a decision by the Queenstown Lakes District Council to allow a village to be built with up to 3500 houses.

Residents Association member Penny Manning says almost all residents are behind the move which will bring amenities Cardrona lacks because it is so small.

However, most residents in Arrowtown oppose a plan by the council to expand its boundaries to allow another 400 houses to be built.

Resident, Mia Stafford-Bush, says up to 97% of Arrowtown residents surveyed want a stop to further growth.
