Lauaki to apply for discharge over assault

Sentencing has been delayed for Chiefs rugby player Sione Lauaki on a charge of assault as his lawyer plans to apply for a discharge without conviction.

In April, Lauaki pleaded guilty to assaulting a man in a bar in Hamilton in March after an argument over a drink.

He was due to be sentenced on Thursday in the Hamilton District Court but his lawyer successfully applied for an adjournment, in order to be able to make an application for a discharge without conviction.

The court heard that Lauaki was in negotiations with an overseas club, possibly Toyota in Japan, and any conviction would seriously affect that.

The application for a discharge will be heard 24 June.
