A former Hamilton midwife has been sent to jail for two years and four months for claiming payments for delivering babies that didn't exist.

Pania Lee Nin, 43, admitted two charges of obtaining by deception after defrauding the Ministry of Health of $357,139.

She was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court.

Her offending was picked up during a ministry audit of claims made for maternity services.

The ministry said Nin's claims for maternity and home birthing services revealed that between January 2008 and January this year, she had been paid for services to five mothers and 120 babies that didn't exist.
