Limits upheld on use of small Northland landfill

Ratepayers in Russell have won the latest round in a fight with the Far North District Council over dumping of rubbish in a small landfill there.

Picketers turned away rubbish trucks on Monday, when the council first tried to use the Russell landfill, in a bid to cut transport costs.

Now the Northland Regional Council has ruled the district council's resource consent for the Russell landfill does not cover dumping of materials from around the district.

The district council says it will now apply for a variation to its resource consent for the Russell landfill - and continue to truck rubbish to the Redfern tip near Albany.
