Stability of Canterbury landfill questioned

12:17 pm on 5 December 2008

A private oil exploration near the major landfill in Canterbury has backed an earlier report that seismic activity in the region may affect the stability of the landfill.

The Kate Valley landfill has been running since 2005 and takes most of Canterbury's waste.

Green Gate drilling company director Stacey Radford says he offered his new information to Transwaste, which runs the landfill, in August, but Transwaste did not want it.

While neither report says conclusively that the area would be made unstable seismic acitvity, he says further investigations should be done.
