Lost trampers rescued from Tongariro National Park

Two trampers are being walked to safety in Tongariro National Park after being found by rescuers.

The man and woman started their walk on the Round the Mountain Track from Whakapapa Village to Whakapapaiti Hut at lunchtime on Saturday.

They alerted the police last night when they got lost.

A team of search and rescue volunteers found them about 4am today.

They were cold and hungry but in sleeping bags.

Police said the volunteers went to great lengths to find the pair, by negotiating swollen rivers in cold conditions and heavy rain.
