Manukau City Council member Daniel Newman says he is pleased that a judge has recognised the serious problem of armed robberies in south Auckland.
Justice Lang at the High Court in Auckland on Friday sentenced six men to prison for their parts in a 2008 armed robbery in which a Manurewa liquor store owner, Navtej Singh, was killed.
Justice Lang said the area has a problem with armed robbery and the sentences have to deter other young people from committing such crimes.
Cr Newman says the judge is right in identifying the problem.
However, says he would like to see the initiative widened further than South Auckland and believes burglary rates across the country could be reduced.
