Napier Marineland temporary re-opening on the cards

11:05 am on 10 December 2008

A Napier City Council committee is recommending its Marineland attraction re-open to the public on a temporary basis.

The council closed the marine zoo in September after the last dolphin there died, but agreed to re-consider its future following public consultation.

Mayor Barbara Arnott most people who made submissions wanted the facility reopened.

She said the during the suggested re-opening, from 20 December to the end of the April school holidays, there would be an opportunity for people to view the remaining animals, but no formal shows.

Ms Arnott says the committee also recommends that council staff spend $60,000 looking at a new attraction at Marineland, based on marine animals and environmental education.

The full council will consider the recommendations next week.
