Auditor-General to help review of Beckham event

12:46 pm on 10 December 2008

The Auditor-General will investigate why a football match starring high profile sportsman David Beckham was a financial failure for the Auckland Regional Council.

Just 16,600 people turned out to watch Beckham play for the LA Galaxy against the Oceania All Stars at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday, 4,600 short of the number needed for the council to break even on the event.

Council chairman Mike Lee said he involved the Auditor-General to ensure the internally conducted review is credible.

He said the council was not using outside consultants as that would cost even more money.

Mike Lee said he wants to identify where things went wrong and to ensure those mistakes are not made again.
