Police looking for the mother of a baby boy found dead in an Auckland reserve three weeks ago say she might not be a local.

The newborn's body was found on Mona Avenue in Mangere Bridge last month.

Police released photos of the two pieces of adult clothing the baby was wrapped in - a singlet with the words 'Samoan Culture - our pride and joy' and blue trackpants.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Bright said, while people had offered information, they were not assuming the mother was Samoan or even that she was living in the area.

"Not necessarily just in Mangere, so we want to appeal to a wider range of public across Auckland, and even wider. So if anyone knows anything, recognises that clothing, or believes they know who the mother is, please give us a call."

Ms Bright said the preliminary post-mortem of the newborn did not give any definitive answers.
