Ministry admits errors in Mapua site cleanup

The Ministry for the Environment has admitted it made mistakes during the cleanup of a contaminated site at Mapua near Nelson.

An independent report has been released into the cleanup of the former Fruitgrowers Chemical Company site.

Environment Minister Nick Smith said the report shows embarrassing mistakes such as the Ministry failing to comply with resource consents.

Dr Smith says he has been advised by the Ministry it accepts the report in full, and will implement all its recommendations.

The last batch of contaminated soil at the site was treated last year, however a number of key reports are yet to be done before the site can be handed back to the community.

Mapua and Districts Community Association chairperson Devin Gallagher says the Ministry needs to get on with things, as it appears there is no end in sight.
