A man has appeared in court after a woman jogger was stabbed on a Nelson beach in what appears to be a random attack.

Nelson police said two men became involved in an altercation near Tahunanui Beach in Nelson about 9.30pm last night.

A woman running in the area - who was not known to either man - was then approached by one of them and stabbed in the leg with a large knife.

Other people on the beach came to her aid and the woman received hospital treatment. Police said she was left traumatised by the incident.

Police said the public helped identify a man who was arrested later that evening.

He faced court this morning charged with wounding with intent to injure and cause grievous bodily harm, and assaulting a police officer.
