Level crossings out of action after iron put on rails

8:42 am on 12 December 2008

Three level crossings are out of action in Christchurch after a freight train crashed into track irons that had been put on the tracks.

Extensive damage to the relay box at the side of the lines stopped the barrier arms working at three intersections in the city, slowing traffic and trains.

The incident happened at Blighs Road Crossing just before 1am on Friday.

The train was also damaged.
