Whangarei Mayor Stan Semenoff has been booed at a rally protesting about sewage spills in Whangarei harbour.

More than 300 people marched through the city centre at at midday on Friday to protest against recurring sewage overflows.

The march stopped traffic and shoppers applauded. A petition of more than 5000 signatures was presented to the mayor.

But Mr Semenoff was booed loudly following a speech saying the council couldn't afford to instantly solve the sewage problem.
