The award-winning Lightpath cycleway opened last December and features an architecturally-designed bridge.

The pink path has faded and the surface of the bridge leading to it is badly damaged.

Wet weather at the time the surface was laid was believed to have caused bonding issues on the bridge leading to the Lightpath.

Auckland Highways manager Brett Gliddon said the Lightpath surfacing would be refreshed and UV protected to prevent fading as part of ongoing maintenance of the infrastructure. The bonding issues would be fixed during the maintenance work.

The Transport Agency was delighted by its popularity, he said.

The agency, along with Auckland Transport and Auckland Council, would keep it well maintained.

Bike Auckland said the number of cyclists and walkers using the Lightbridge far outstripped 10-year predictions.

Chairwoman Barbara Cuthbert said 900 cyclists and 2700 walkers used it daily.

She said the work would not be costly and it was important to maintain the cycleway because it was popular for fashion shoots, advertisements, local people and tourists.
