MetService said today's weather should be similar to Christmas Eve, with some isolated showers and cloud about the coast.

Showers are possible in the morning on the western side of the North Island, Southland, Banks Peninsula and around Greymouth, and parts of Northland may see a light shower in the afternoon.

There is also rain in the forecast for the Chatham Islands.

The afternoon should be dry and fairly cool for most of the country - while the temperature for most of the South Island should struggle to rise above 20 degrees, warm weather and temperatures in the early to mid-20s are expected in central Otago, and around the eastern edge of the North Island.

WeatherWatch said there may also be heavier afternoon downpours around the ranges of North Canterbury and the eastern ranges of the North Island, but these should fade away after sunset.

WeatherWatch also warned there may be some windy weather in Coastal Otago, Coastal Southland, Banks Peninsula, Farewell Spit area, Taranaki, Waikato and Auckland.

Boxing Day should see calmer, warmer weather for more regions, with a high expected to move in.
