Police say an attack on a teacher during class at a high school in Te Puke was vicious.

The 53-year-old maths teacher at Te Puke High School was stabbed several times in his neck and shoulder and was treated in Tauranga Hospital and later discharged.

Police have been interviewing a 13-year-old student following the attack which happened in a full classroom just after 11am on Monday.

Western Bay of Plenty Area Commander Inspector Mike Clement says the attack was vicious and very concerning.

"Four stab wounds to the neck and shoulders of anybody is vicious and very traumatic for the victim - and I think it's fair also to say the victim is very lucky."

Police say the 13-year-old has been taken into custody and will be placed in the care of Child, Youth and Family, pending a family group conference.

Police have conducted a scene examination of the classroom and have recovered the weapon used. Mr Clements says the investigation will take a few more days.

Principal Alan Liddle says the teacher is at home resting, is in good spirits and looking forward to returning to work.

Students and teachers have been offered support and counselling.
