Hundreds injured on Rhythm and Vines open night

8:22 pm on 30 December 2016

Paramedics treated 200 festivalgoers at the opening of Rhythm and Vines in Gisborne last night.

St John Ambulance staff member Shane Clapperton said three people were taken to Gisborne Hospital for drug and alcohol issues. The remainder were treated for minor cuts and sprains.

He said that number was nothing out of the ordinary for the festival.

About 25,000 go each year.

Police made a couple of arrests and seized a small quantity of cannabis and ecstasy.

Area commander Inspector Sam Aberahama said police were happy with the crowd's behaviour, but there were problems with alcohol being drunk in liquor-ban areas outside the Waiohika Estate festival site.
