Judge remands gang supporter over hand signal

7:05 pm on 15 December 2008

A judge in Napier District Court says he will not have his courtroom turned into a stage by clowns.

A supporter in the public gallery made a gang hand signal on Monday during an appearance of six gang members. One of the handcuffed prisoners responded with the same signal.

The six are charged over attacks at Hawke's Bay prison in June.

After Judge Tony Adeane remanded the six for trial, he told the supporter he was in contempt of court and remanded the man in custody for 24 hours.

There was tight security in the court following a brawl in November when a security guard was punched and spat at by a prisoner in the dock.
