A woman posted the complaint about the council owned Matamata Aerodrome facilities online, prompting the council to close the camp and launch an investigation.

Matamata-Piako District mayor Jan Barnes said it meant people would no longer be able to get a bed without a booking.

"The matter is being taken very seriously."

"This incident happened in a residential house on the airfield that the manager was renting. It's to do with the house, not to do with our actual bunk houses."

Mrs Barnes said it was "an employment issue" and staff were working through investigating it.

The campground has been closed since just before Christmas and Mrs Barnes said it would open as soon as the council was comfortable to do so.

The adjoining airfield remains open and Mrs Barnes said a busy events calendar had not been interrupted.
