A man is fighting for his life in Auckland City Hospital after being hit over the head with a piece of wood.
Police said he was attacked at a property in William Jones Drive in the Whangarei suburb of Otangerei yesterday afternoon.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dene Begbie said the 42-year-old victim had surgery last night and remained in a critical condition.
Witnesses have been spoken to, and the scene was being examined today, he said.
