Crews were called to the blaze just before 5pm, and 14 appliances and three helicopters rushed to the scene to contain the flames.

The fire broke out in grass and scrub land and was estimated to be cover around 600m by 300m of land.

Helicopters battling the blaze have this evening been stood down.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Colin Underdown said the role of fire crews at this stage was to stand by and keep a watch on the scene overnight.

He said there were indications the fire had been brought under control but it had not been officially confirmed.
