Eight people have been charged following a gang confrontation in Gisborne on Thursday.

Gisborne police said the confrontation began when a member of the Mongrel Mob gang went into an area dominated by the Black Power gang.

The police say they received a number of calls from worried members of the public, and sent five police cars to the scene.

They arrested nine people, and charged eight with offences including disorderly behaviour and possession of offensive weapons.

Most of those charged have appeared in court, and were released on bail until the New Year.
