Police speak to staff member over teen alcohol death

10:46 pm on 12 May 2010

Police say they have spoken to a staff member who took a drunk and unconscious 16-year-old home but did not call an ambulance. The teenager, James Webster, later died in his sleep.

The King's College student had drunk a bottle of vodka outside the birthday party of the police employee's daughter in the suburb of Grey Lynn.

Police say they spoke to the staff member, who they say is technically not a sworn officer, the morning the 16-year-old was found dead.

Police are not currently looking at his involvement but inquiries into James Webster's death are ongoing, they say.

A post-mortem failed to reveal the cause of death and police are awaiting a toxicology report.
