Reports a dog was shot in a North Shore park that prompted a police helicopter search was apparently a false alarm.

A woman was walking her dog in Deep Creek Reserve in the Auckland suburb of Torbay about 7pm yesterday when her dog was fatally injured.

Police say the animal was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic and died soon afterwards.

There was concern from the public that the dog had been shot and police teams and a helicopter scoured the area last night.

However, a bullet was not detected during an x-ray and there were no eyewitnesses, police said.
