It's shrouded in mystery and liberal amounts of white plastic, but now two new spooks will get to lift the veil on the Waihopai spybase.

The external intelligence agency, the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), is looking for staff to fill 11 vacancies - including two positions at the Waihopai Station facility in Marlborough.

GCSB is seeking people to fill roles from relationship management to information and computer specialists, and cyber incident analysts.

Waihopai Station is part of a network of facilities used by the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, made up of agencies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

In 2008, the spy base was attacked by Ploughshares activists, who cut through a fence and slashed one of the large white domes covering a satellite dish.

Jounalist Nicky Hager also revealed the station's role in his 1996 book Secret Power, which detailed the surveillance system, ECHELON, used at the Waihopai spy base at the time.
