Developed by a New Zealand company, HMI Technologies, it will be trialled over several years before deciding whether to bring it into regular service at the airport.

The 15-seat shuttle will ferry passengers and baggage around.

The project has the backing of the Christchurch City Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency, which are considering using autonomous vehicles in other areas.
