3:46 pm on 21 December 2008

A weekend drink driving campaign in Auckland resulted in 233 people being charged with driving with excess breath alcohol levels.

Some 16,558 vehicles were stopped at 14 checkpoints in Manukau and Papakura over two nights.

Police say an additional 35 arrests were made for a variety of offences including driving stolen vehicles and possession of drugs.

One driver, aged 16, was found to be nearly five times over the legal limit.

Police say some of the offenders called friends who were not sober to give them a lift home.
