Three people, including two teenage girls, made a brief appearance in court in Tauranga on Monday charged over the killing of an elderly Bay of Plenty man.

John Rowe, 78, was found dead in his Opotiki home last month with severe head injuries.

The two girls, aged 15 and 17, are charged with murder. They appeared in the Youth Court in Tauranga.

A man, 21, is charged with being an accessory after the fact and attempting to defeat the course of justice. He appeared in the District Court.

All three were remanded in custody. They have name suppression and will appear before the courts again in January.
