Police have begun a homicide investigation into the death of a man found unconscious on Monday in the Hawke's Bay town of Haumoana.
They believe the 45-year-old local man was assaulted near Domain Road in the small coastal town.
He has since died in Hawke's Bay Hospital.
Police said the man had long, scraggly hair and was wearing a long-sleeved red top.
They would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the man in and around Grange Road North and Domain Road on Sunday afternoon or evening.
