Footage of daylight kidnapping released

Police have released CCTV footage of a car believed to be the one that a woman was abducted and sexually assaulted in.

The woman was grabbed off a central Auckland street in broad daylight and was forced into a car yesterday afternoon.

The woman, in her mid-20s, has been released from hospital after she was injured jumping from the car as it sped through Auckland's Eden Terrace just before 2pm.

Police have released two video clips from a camera on Haslett Street. While the camera says the time is 1.53pm, it is four minutes slow and actually shows footage from 1.57pm.

Police said it was highly likely it showed the vehicle with the victim inside at the time.

"The victim has described being flung headfirst into the foot-well of the passenger seat by the offender, and being upside down and struggling to get out," Detective Inspector Aaron Pascoe said.

Mr Pascoe said she was in the car only a short time, but it was a traumatic ordeal and she was trying to come to terms with what had happened to her.

In the second video, the car can be seen on the road 12 seconds into the footage. Police said the car in the driveway was not connected to the attack:

Police have a more complete description of the man after interviewing the woman again today.

He is a light-skinned Maori or Pacific Islander of fat or large build, 180 centimetres tall, with full-length tattoos on both arms, wearing a white, red and blue chequered shirt.

A large group of officers have been assigned to the case and have received more than 20 calls about the abduction.

A leaflet drop in Eden Terrace got underway this morning and police are going door-to-door asking for information.

The woman was walking along Haslett Street towards Ponsonby when she saw a man standing next to several parked cars. As she passed the man, he grabbed her from behind and dragged her into his car.

The man drove off and a struggle took place, which ended with the woman breaking free, opening the door and jumping out of the moving car.

Two members of the public saw her jump from the car on Copeland Street, and the car then speed towards Ian McKinnon Drive, police said.
