Police promote Palmerston North party register

9:16 am on 26 December 2008

The police in Palmerston North believe a new system that allows party hosts to register their events is deterring trouble makers.

The police say when someone registers a party with them, they find out how many are attending, where and when it is to be held, and for what purpose.

They send information to the host about trespass, noise control and what to do with gatecrashers. During the party they phone, and they make at least one drive-past.

The police say the fact that a party is registered appears to be putting off unwanted guests. They have heard that when the word is passed around about a party, the word is also passed around that it has been registered with the police.

Acting Senior Sergeant Lance Kennedy says a number of other police stations have been emailing for details of how the register works.
