Fewer than expected applications have been lodged to operate much heavier trucks on State Highways and local roads.

In the two weeks since firms have been able to apply for permits to transport more than the standard 44-tonne limit, just 15 applications have been made to the Transport Agency.

Road Transport Forum chief executive Tony Friedlander while that's lower than expected, permit applications should increase as the roading network is checked and approved for use by heavy vehicles.

At present, the impact from heavier trucks on more than half the state highway network is unknown.
