Fuel line leak sparks emergency response at Wellington Airport

7:04 pm on 15 May 2010

Wellington airport has been dealing with an emergency after fuel from the engine of an Air New Zealand plane spilled onto the tarmac.

Air New Zealand says the emergency was caused by a leak in the aircraft's fuel line.

The airline says just before flight NZ 5038 from Dunedin landed on Saturday afternoon with 64 passengers and crew onboard, its pilots noticed that a light was indicating an engine fire.

The airport says fire trucks met the ATR turbo-prop aircraft but the airline says there was no fire.

The airport's runway was closed for half an hour and other planes bound for Wellington were diverted to other airports.

About 20 flights have been delayed or cancelled by the incident.

About 150 passengers on a flight from Auckland which was diverted to Palmerston North are being bussed to Wellington.
