A number of homes in the Wellington suburb of Karori were evacuated this evening, after someone spotted a grenade lying in the gutter.
Police said they were called to Victory Avenue about 5.20pm.
Officers set up cordons and evacuated nearby houses.
The Defence Force's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team removed the grenade, and declared it inactive.
